Student Life

In the city
The main student area is within walking distance of the city centre and Belfast Metropolitan, which is located in the centre of the city and a short walk from Queens University. Our main buildings are at the apex of Belfast's famous Golden Mile of pubs, clubs, cafe bars, restaurants and entertainment venues. These not only provide a bewildering variety of leisure-time options, but are a valuable source of student part-time employment. Most of our finest museums, galleries and theatres, great parks and gardens, international sports stadiums and wonderful wildlife reserves, are within walking distance.

Because of our central location and unique position in Belfast life, you will be at the hub of social and cultural life in the city. You are sure to be made welcome as you settle into student life in this lively, fascinating and hard-working city.

Clubs and Associations
The College has a number of established sporting clubs including Soccer, Gaelic, Football, Hockey, Rugby Football, Basketball, Netball, Pool and Bowling. Getting involved in sport is a great way to meet other students, stay fit and represent the Institute against other colleges and Universities. Our Multi-cultural Society also offers another opportunity to meet and befriend students from around the world, get involved in cultural events and give you an opportunity to get involved in College life. If you are interested in getting involved in any of our clubs/associations make sure you sign up during Fresher's Fair in September.

The Students' Union is run by students for students. It represents you while protecting and enhancing the quality of student life at the College. The Students' Union can promote your concerns and ideas for change to College authorities and outside agencies and organisations. On enrolment at Belfast Met, you automatically become a member of the Students' Union. This enables you to avail of all Students' Union support services, attend social activities and receive all free offers and give-aways throughout the year.

Guidance and counselling
Careers advice is an integral part of our learning programmes. This advice is available before you start your course to help you decide which career direction would suit you best, and during the course to prepare you for your progression into work. We will provide you with information on the career opportunities available in your specialist areas.

The College also provides trained and experienced educational counsellors that can help you to deal with a wide range of issues such as personal or family worries, or general feelings of inability to cope with the pressures of life.

Visit our guidance and counselling page for more information.

  • Health and banking information.

During your time with us you will hopefully get an opportunity to experience some of our cultural diversity events and/or join the Multicultural society.

Learning Resource Centres
On each of the Colleges' main sites, there is a library and Learning Resource Centre. Free Internet access is available to College students in our Learning Resource centres. A range of subject and vocational gateways now link the College home page to relevant World Wide Web resources.

The library is open daily during term time with computers available from 9am-8pm. This resource is also available on Saturday mornings in our Millfield Campus.

We provide: open access IT facilities, e-learning resources, online journals, flexible learning materials, individual video viewing, group work areas, an audio workstation and CD ROM information sources. These complement our book and periodical collections. Each centre also provides a support Helpdesk and access to a self-service photocopier with printing and binding facilities to assist in assignment and coursework production. You can also consult past exam papers, syllabuses, college and University prospectuses.

Experienced Centre staff are available to deal with learners' enquiries, to help access information and to use all the facilities.
