Developing Innovation at the Foundry

Established in 1962 the Foundry has been recognised as a Centre of Excellence in teaching young apprentices the skills and techniques they need throughout their careers. In more recent times the Foundry has had to develop training techniques to address the skills of staff in gravity die, low pressure and high pressure die casting to address the needs of international corporations such as Montupet and Ryobi Aluminimum Castings.

With the growing reputation of The Foundry, it has recently won a commission by the National Museum of Scotland to manufacture ten Scottish Halberds plus the rivets needed to put them together.

Selected over hundreds of other foundries based in England and Scotland the commission represents a real coup for the Belfast Metropolitan College and provides concrete evidence of its growing reputation outside of Northern Ireland.

“We were delighted to receive the order from the National Museum of Scotland which only displays work of an exceptional standard and quality. Upon completion the finished halberds will form part of a prestigious living history exhibition at the museum and it is a real achievement to be involved in it,” said Ken Barr, Lecturer, Foundry Practice.

Used predominantly in the early Bronze Age the halberd is a famous weapon of prehistoric Europe and the replica’s to be created by the Foundry must be authentic in every way.
